I like to get an idea from the student and the parent what their expectations are for music lessons. From there, the student and I come up with musical goals to accomplish for that year. We create a practice schedule based on the student's school and extracurricular activities and try to follow that schedule as much as possible. I also like to incorporate other styles of music such as popular Broadway pieces and Contemporary pieces into the student's repertoire so that they can have greater diversity in their piano playing or singing. I have always believed that music is a conversation between the musician and the audience, and the instrument is the interpreter. With this in mind, with any age, I start with a regular conversation. Knowing the passion, interest level, and motivation of the students helps me create a method of teaching that is specific to the individual. I also learn their experience and knowledge level. I then let the student show me their skills by playing a little, allowing them to loosen up and get comfortable with me, while I analyze and access strengths and weaknesses. Read More

Perfection is not important to me. What is important is that my students strive and become the best that they can be. I want to instill in them the desire to reach their goals. That being said, I believe every student will work at their own pace. We will work together on goals that are realistic during the time frame. I will ask the student what his/her goals are and I will use my set of skills to work towards those goals through repertoire, vocal exercises, and an understanding of the voice. Read More

Teaching has always been part of my growth through various stages in my career. Through out high school I have coached and taught at various churches by strengthening their worship teams as well as several middle school singers at my home studio that were preparing for their Region auditions along with their solo and ensemble competitions. I enjoy watching younger generations fall in love with the art of music and continuously reach out to expand their talent and strengthen their craft. Read More

My teaching styles are ever-changing but first and foremost I strive to meet the student where they are at in their musical journey, work in small chunks and learn to love the act of learning. Timing, technique, tuning, dynamics, timbre, music theory, writing, recording, listening improvisation (and more) are all crucial to being a modern musician but the most important of these is fun. If you aren't enjoying my teaching then I am not doing my job correctly. Read More
