I taught at The University of Cape Town as a lecture in Jazz vocal studies from 2004. I was involved in The Artscape Youth Jazz Program as a mentor for several years as well as a performer and lecturer for several years at The National Arts Festival/ Grahamstown Jazz festival in South Africa. I have also taught at the summer jazz camp program in Prague for the past 5 years. I love working with students who want to dare to try new things! I think that students grow most when they are stretched out of their comfort zone. This allows them to find their limits physically, vocally, emotionally, and then to build upon their strengths to become the artists they strive to be. I like to incorporate physicality to help loosen the body and free the mind from overthinking. I also believe music is a place to express and will always meet my student where they are each lesson. Nothing is more rewarding to me than playing a role in the artistic development of young singers. I love being able to help my students gain confidence in their abilities and reach their goals. One of my greatest goals as a teacher is to instill a lifelong love of music in each of my students. While singing takes practice and discipline, it should also be a lot of fun. I do not stick to one method or style of teaching as each student is different. A twelve-year-old student who wants to write songs, and sing Taylor Swift, will need a very different approach than a fifty-year-old opera singer. However, I do implement two very important key points in my teaching: Honesty and health. I want my students to enjoy their music lessons, I don't want it to feel like a chore. It can be really fulfilling when I see a student playing or singing something with joy! I pay close attention to what exercises students seem to want to spend the most time on and the ones they get frustrated with. This helps me balance the lesson by breaking things up and putting them in an appropriate order so the student will stay engaged. Read More

I began teaching voice and piano lessons in grad school and have been teaching for the past 5 years. I love sharing my passion for the voice as an instrument, and I feel that a strong foundation of music theory and keyboard skills is a must for vocalists. I enjoy incorporating all of these skills into lessons. I've also found that no matter what style and genre of music interests you there is a primary fundamental healthy technique as the foundation for all of them, and I find it ver exciting and thrilling to develop the skills needed to unlock this vocal freedom! All of my students work on tried and true Bel Canto and Swedish techniques. I will give each student special vocal exercises to work on at home. I generally assign songs from The 24 Italian Songs and Arias songbook and I use Musical Theater Anthologies. Some of my more advanced High School students work on Opera arias. Read More
