I have high expectations in y studio, but I make it clear that students will progress at different speeds and that’s okay. Every week I give a set of warm-ups and exercises to focus on and expect students to practice so we can hone them when we’re together, but I’ll never ask a student to do something they’re not comfortable or familiar with - if ever there’s a question I’m there to answer or demonstrate. It's important to me that students enjoy what they are singing--if they don't, they won't be motivated, are less likely to practice, and they won't progress as quickly. Still, I believe students should sing a variety of literature (and may even find something they didn't know they enjoyed), and regularly start beginning students with some simple Italian art songs.
