For brass instrumental students, I generally use the Rubank Method books, focusing on care of the instrument and basic fundamentals. For piano students I use a variety of different method books and am not tied down to any one series. We will also work on scales and the Hannon series For vocal students, I use a series of vocalises, scales and other exercises to strengthen the voice. My teaching style is to MAKE IT FUN. No punishment. I encourage my students to play or sing whatever they want with my help for the structure. For example: I'm teaching a student to date music theory. At one point 10 years ago when I was teaching a student theory, she completely shut down and wanted no longer to take piano lessons because of the difficulty of it.
