For 2 years starting in 2017, I worked as a graduate voice assistant at the University of Minnesota where I taught vocal methods in a classroom environment, as well as private lessons to a studio of 18+ students. I like to start out by setting a couple realistic goals for the long-term with my students, then breaking those goals down into manageable steps each associated with one or two pieces. Guitar: For children, I prefer the FJH Young Beginner Guitar method, but for adults I would prefer Hal Leonard if the student is looking to learn both chords and melody using folk music. I could also teach guitar based on gospel and Christian praise music if the student prefers. I have taught students with an interest in rock music, but only to give them the basic foundation skills of chords and notes to build on with another teacher who has more of a rock music speciality. For students of all levels, I emphasize the fundamentals. No matter what style our focus is in, the development of scales, chord progressions, modes and technique patterns are universal. I incorporate solo literature early and often and work with the students to play the music that they listen to every day. My final goal is how to enjoy singing. In my opinion, the most important thing is that singing should be comfortable to both a singer and an audience. For this reason, I generally help them to sing comfortably. Most of the students have a common problem to sing. I would say it is artificial voice which makes their voice tired and injured. I use generally use Faber and Faber for piano and the Yamaha method for guitar. However, each student learns differently therefore I like to meet and assess the needs before choosing a course to follow. For band students, I use the school's chosen method of instruction supplementing with theory, technique and performance pieces. For piano students, I get to know each student's taste in music and choose accordingly.
