I began formal study of piano at age seven, learned to sing by participating choir from seventh through ninth grades, and developed general music skills by being a percussionist in Symphonic Band where I attended high school. From that time, I continued playing repertoire until entering college to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance with an emphasis on research. Drum instruction includes learning the 26 standard drum rudiments. A must to learn proper drum playing, whether on snare drum, drumset or even axulliary perucssion instruments. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with either the John Schaum method book series or the James Bastien method book series. Both book series are fun, colorful, and engaging for the student. Once the student has progressed to have a better grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate. When I was 8 years old, my aunt gave me my very first piano lesson. I have such fond memories of that time with her. I still remember how we would sit on the couch and I'd try to name off the notes on my music flashcards as quickly as possible so no card would be put in the back of the pile for a redo!
