Working for a local drum teacher in 2005, I started teaching private music lessons in students' homes. From there, I took up residence at a local music store where I taught guitar, ukulele, bass, harmonica, songwriting, and music theory for the next fifteen years. During the pandemic, I added teaching virtually to my repertoire and have fallen in love with it. For Voice I cater my teaching to the student's goals and aspirations. The first 10-15 minutes of a lessons are spent doing vocal warmups and sightsinging exercises. The remaining time is spent working on repertoire that the student and myself choose together. For Piano I work out of the Faber Piano Adventure Books. I accomplish this by incorporating the interests of each student and including time in each lesson to improvise, create, or learn music they are interested in. Recognizing that each student is unique, i.e., their instruments, learning styles, mental and emotional make-up, etc., I need to be flexible in how I work with each student. There is no one-size-fits-all! I work to understand each student's learning style and adapt my teaching accordingly. I ask a lot of questions, asking the student to think about their own learning style, what they are experiencing, hearing, and feeling. This not only gives me cues on how to better adapt my teaching style to them, but gets them thinking about what they are doing and reinforces their learning, which in turn helps them in their own practice by starting to become their own best teacher. In college, I taught private music theory lessons to a given curriculum. I also music directed a male-voiced a cappella group, conducted a chamber choir, and music directed and accompanied several musical theater productions. Each of these, to different degrees, requires a one-on-one approach, so no matter what the setting, I am always working personally with the student to determine what it is they want to achieve and help them to get there. If a student isn't having fun learning the instrument then I am doing something wrong! Learning should be fun and a joy not a chore. I try to encourage the students to practice without being told to do so. With that comes a joy of doing it on your own and for themselves not for anyone else.
