Voice Lessons in Bergen Beach, NY

Instruments: Voice

Music is my passion, and I strive to keep the music from yesterday alive by performing them, and encouraging and teaching others to do the same. It is most important to be unique, and to find your own sound, your own voice. I started singing professionally when I was 12 years old. My style eventually evolved to what it is today. I am still learning, and I will continue to learn to become a better singer and musician. Read More

I make it a point to ask all students (or parents for my younger ones) to purchase a notepad where assignments, expectations, exercises, tips/tricks can be written down to help them progress during the year and into the following week of lessons. My favorite aspect about teaching is pushing students beyond the limit they place for themselves. That being said there must be a mutual understanding that I will do all I can to help students get over a "learning hump" as I call it- I have access to a plethora of journals, articles, teaching websites, a personal library, all of these materials can be scanned, printed out, emailed and whatnot for the benefit of my students. Students learn best at their own pace and in their own ways. Thats whats so great about private teaching. Private lessons afford the opportunity to customize to the students learning style, mood, abilities, and how much theyve practiced. Speaking of practicing, I believe that its my job to give students the skills and tools for their musical development in the most supportive environment and its the students job to meet me halfway. Voice lessons are for the growth and benefit of the student; therefore, my goal as a teacher is to push my students to be the best they can be. While I may use anecdotes of my own experience in lessons, I am helping my students to become future versions of themselves and not my own clones. While this will be challenging work for students, I always make time in a lesson for students to feel successful, as this will ensure future progress and provide satisfying closure. Read More

For a beginning student on guitar, I have them learning notes from a Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, or Alfred starter book. All these books are great, but I believe it depends on the individual student and how they learn. I also teach tab to beginners. I feel it is important to read tabs these days as well as notes. I also work with music theory. It is also important to know what you are doing, not just putting your fingers on the strings. Read More

Voice methodology is to learn how to make the correct sound on the flow of breath.  One must learn how to breathe whether singing loudly or softly in whichever style or genre the student wants to learn. String playing can be hard on the ears when beginning, therefore it is important to develop a good bow technique in order to make the best sound possible.  I use the All For Strings method books.
