Preschool students: I use everything in my hands to help them to love music and enjoy it. We dance, we jump, sometimes we color ... anything that helps them learn. My class basically consists in developing in the little ones curiosity and musical taste. Through musical games and songs, the students will understand the basics of music theory, tone and rhythm. For beginning students (regardless of age instrument) I try to simplify the approach and work on a set of warm ups/exercises coupled with a performance piece or song that they can feel good about and lots of fun listening assignments. From there I have a few options of instruction methods that I tailor to the individual student. More intermediate/advanced students will not escape from some of the basics (metronome, scales, rudiments etc.) but will be met with many more choices of performance material based more on their individual goals. Although building technique and comfort are extremely important, I find that the most essential aspect of learning an instrument is to study the music that you love, and I'm definitely open to adding a bit of musical theory to every lesson if the student is interested.
