I am an active member of Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC). My students take the Certificate of Merit (CM) test annually in performance, theory, sight-reading and ear training. Taking the CM test is optional but highly recommended. I also make sure my students have plenty of chances at performing on stage at recitals by organizing my own recitals or joining forces with other MTAC teachers. I typically use a style of traditional classical instruction. Including scales, studies, and repertoire. I teach sight reading and ear training. I use memorization, and critical listening skills. For stringed instruments, I uses the Suzuki method for teaching the basic repertory of the instruments. This method is an ear training method in which the student plays by ear. It starts out very simple so students of all ages can learn and progress very quickly. For 3-5 year olds on piano I use Wunderkeys and supplement with Bastien Music Tree and music I have written when note reading is introduced. Usually I continue into Faber and Faber but Wunderkeys is adding more method books for beginners 5+ and I may start using that once it is available for purchase. I highly encourage theory and incorporate it into lessons when time. I have use Three Cranky Women theory books and Julie McIntosh Johnson Theory. Read More
