I trained classically for almost six years, and then branced out to old-time, celtic, and bluegrass fiddling. I performed in, and won, several fiddle contests throughout high school, but then discovered jazz and improvisation, and found my true calling.   I have performed with a wide variety of groups, from traditional bluegrass to country-punk, from folky singer-songwriters to a hip-hop group, and love nothing more then creativly interacting with others, adding my own voice to whatever else is going on. I try my best to keep lessons fun, especially with the younger students. For example, Sometimes we play music games, sometimes we walk/dance to learn about rhythm, sometimes we sing. I also have small group practices each month to combine students at about the same level, they play togher, they perform for each other, make constructive suggestions and encourage each other. My teaching style is more relaxed and less strict than other teachers, especially for beginner students, though I do emphasize the importance of consistent practice and listening. I believe that not only practicing, but also listening to what you are practicing, especially, pieces is very important for the development of the musical ear. For stringed instruments, I uses the Suzuki method for teaching the basic repertory of the instruments. This method is an ear training method in which the student plays by ear. It starts out very simple so students of all ages can learn and progress very quickly.
