As a teacher, my goal is to give students the technical tools and sensitivity of listening necessary to freely express themselves through the violin, no matter what level they may be. Much of my system of teaching has been passed down from my mentor Li Lin, who masterfully taught hundreds of young violinists of all ages in San Francisco before being appointed faculty at The Juilliard School. His approach (and mine) combines the systematic technical discipline of the Russian violin school with the nurturing and personalized care for each individual student of the late pedagogue Dorothy DeLay. I am a passionate and dedicated violinist and instructor who loves sharing my knowledge and working with students of all levels. Since the age of 11, I have been studying the violin on a systematic and professional training track. Performing in symphonic orchestras and chamber ensembles has been truly enjoyable and enriching. I am a committed and caring teacher and performer who is extremely dedicated to my passion for making and sharing music. This past summer, I graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with a first class honors masters degree in violin performance, from where I also received my undergraduate and teaching degrees. I don't typically use a method series for Voice, as I use a series of vocal exercises I have memorized over the years from my own vocal teacher for technical voice training and warm-up. It's important to note that for beginner piano students I will use a method, but for more advanced-beginners and intermediate players I focus on chord theory and rhythmic playing, as I am a self taught pianist and do not teach classical piano. As an instructor, its important to me that my students are developing both their skills and their love for music at an equal rate. I do this by assigning exercises and material that will be both rewarding and fun for the student. I also set timely goals so that they have something to look forward to in their next lesson. During my lessons, I also do a lot of mirroring (showing how I play a certain passage with my instrument) so that they can visualize the proper implementation of a passage. Read More

My methods are non-traditional for some students and traditional for others. Each person learns differently and needs different methods to achieve their goals. I have used Essential Methods books, Jump Right In books, and others that I have found in my studies as a music teacher. I believe music is learned in many different ways, by ear, by reading, and by playing. We learn to talk by talking and being surrounded by those who talk. Read More
