I started teaching violin at The Miracle Center, through the After School Matters program 10 years ago. Since then I've been violin teacher at several Chicago Public Schools, Chicago District Parks and violin teacher at the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance. I currently teach at CPS schools Thorp Scholastic Academy and Coonley Elementary. I've worked with students of all ages and enjoy finding new and fun ways to approach leaning. The first lesson is always partly an interview so I can understand exactly what the student's goals are. I typically establish good posture and breathing habits (or bowing and fingering, if violin) first and then move on to essential warm-up exercises. Those exercises then become their regular homework, to hopefully be practiced multiple times a week or if possible, every day. The courses I took of music theory, private lessons, group lessons, and orchestra focused on countless composers and many styles, specifically within the Suzuki method. My ear for listening and playing, sight reading, and composing through improv has been practiced for 17 years now. Through being a Ballerina as well, I have a deeper understanding of musicality and what it means to feel the music. My teaching style is based off of my experiences with 10+ teachers I worked with in my history of violin playing (25 years!). I had a lot of fabulous teachers in my life, but the ones I remember and am truly grateful for are the ones who inspired me to be a better musician and ones who taught me how to teach myself. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more.
