Throughout the process, I also integrate tidbits of music theory and history to give the student a more well-rounded experience.  As for guitar and piano, I normally take a more custom approach to teaching that tends to not revolve around any specific method book. However, I typically teach beginning pianists and guitarists how to read through and play simple pieces of music so that they understand the fundamentals before moving on to a mix of songs or pieces that I select and songs or pieces that the student wishes to play so as to keep things fresh and exciting.  Read More

My approach to teaching varies with the age level of each student. With younger students, imitation is often one of the best methods of learning and I prefer the Suzuki method for students up to age 8, especially with strings. For older children and adults, learning music notation and basic music theory for a full understanding of musical language are more important to get them to the level where they can learn any music that they want to play for fun. In addition, I play & teach old time fiddle tunes like Arkansas Traveler, Soldier's Joy, & Ragtime Annie, and Bluegrass songs/instrumentals. I also teach a variety of just nice, popular songs like Auld Land Syne. America the Beautiful, Jingle Bells, & You Are My Sunshine. All of this includes keys, chords, scales, and theory. One IMPORTANT & UNIQUE feature of my lessons is my 4 color CHARTS which ever student can have. They are not necessary for the learning process, but they make it easy to relearn song/tunes much later if the musician has forgotten them. Read More

My love of music grew as a child having a family supportive of music education. I see the participation in playing musical instruments as much of a fun activity as it is a physical and mental workout. After receiving my Associate in Science in Music I went straight into a studio and started teaching a range of students from 4 - 24 years old, and from the never-picked-up-an-instrument-before to I-can't-wait-for-the-competition levels. First lesson I start by assessing what level the student is at and what goals they have with their music and develop a lesson plan from there. I focus first on fundamentals of sound and technique to build a foundation for the student then work on scales and repertoire to get them playing music. From there it is a focus on musicality and performance. A lesson plan for example may be working on solo repertoire by breaking down the piece by focusing on different elements that make the song; the scale, they rhythm, certain patterns by measure, techniques required, etc. Read More
