I am a traditional teacher in that I focus on laying a secure foundation to prevent any unnatural habits from blocking the students progress in the future and helping the student become completely independent of the teacher. For more advanced students, I use technique books and etudes by Hanon, Czerny, Pischna, and Chopin. I don't use a cookie cutter approach, but match the book to the student. It is important for me to expose the student, no matter the age, to not only written material, but chordal structure and basic harmony. Therefore, I will usually add duets to their repertoire as to show them a different aspect of playing violin. I also encourage students to find pieces they want to play, or maybe a tune (ex:Christmas music during the holidays) that they really want to work on.
