I believe that music has the capacity to be an agent of change, both within and outside one's self. Learning a musical instrument can be a very satisfying opportunity to grow as a person and as a musician. For adolescent beginner piano students I recommend 'John Thompson's Earliest Piano Course'. In this series Books I-III build a strong base upon which a student can specialize in different genre and styles graduating from book III. For adult students beginning I would suggest John Thompon's Adult (or Modern) Piano Course. The pacing of this book is far more accelerated and more in keeping with an adult pace to work with. I am a violist first and foremost with eleven years of training, in addition to studying piano for thirteen years and violin for five. In 2016 I started my Undergraduate degree in Music Education at Ithaca College, and will be finishing my degree at Queens College in 2021. I will vary my methods based on the individual student. For students between 3 and 7, I will use the Suzuki method, which in my experience is best for students of that age. For beginners after that, I will use method books and repertoire that not only addresses the students technical and musical development at that point in time, but is also fun and enjoyable to play.
