It is rewarding when a student progresses satisfactorily and begins to feel that passion for music and to continue overcoming challenges. As a teacher my biggest challenge is to get the student to feel comfortable with his instrument and get a good rhythm of study that allows him to develop all his abilities. All students are different, which is why different pedagogical strategies must be applied according to the case Read More

With young beginner string students, I typically will start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. After a few weeks of that, the student will have grasped the fundamentals. and then I will introduce the Suzuki method, supplementing with the O'Connor Method. For piano I generally will start with the Suzuki method and supplement with any songs the student is interested in learning. For Adults I try to find out what style of music the student is interested in, and how much experience they have and structure my lessons accordingly to keep the student engaged and ensure they are having fun! For beginning students in any genre, I begin with learning songs. Classical, jazz, bluegrass, and rock are more easily understood when you spend time playing the music with someone else. Repertoire is chosen with the understanding that fundamentals are key to life long participation and students find positive success when they are able to then share a completed work with their friends and family (think holiday get-togethers!) For young intermediate to advanced players, the philosophy of building one's repertoire continues with the added focus on musical understanding. Read More

If the students already had books from prior music instructor, we pick up from the last lessons after answering questions to make sure the students thoroughly understand the previous lessons from the previous chapters. For beginning students, I've used the Mel Bay's modern bass and guitar methods, James Bastien piano library, Essential Elements for wind instruments, Advanced Rock drumming and Master theory books by Charles S. Peters and Paul Yoder or any music books and online documents download by the the student. Read More
