I have nearly a decade of private teaching experience as well as teaching in group and in school orchestra settings. While in Austin, Joseph ran a successful teaching studio of over 30 violin and viola students that regularly placed in TMEA All-Region Orchestras, UIL State Solo Ensemble Contest, and were members of the Austin Youth Orchestra. I am a graduate of National Kiev Conservatory of Music with Master Degree in both Violin Performance and Music Education. After graduation from conservatory I worked full time in the State Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine for 10 years and then another 8 years in national Kiev Opera and Ballet Theater. I take the great things about the Suzuki Method and use them (fun, creativity, by-ear learning, group jams). Then I take the things I don't like about the method and disregard them (pre-established repetoire, no composition or improv). I teach kids how to concentrate, how to teach themselves, how to ignore distractions, and the philosophy for joyful performance without nervousness. For beginning strings students (even young children) to advanced students, I use the Suzuki method along with the accompanying sight reading book, I Can Read Music. Advanced students who have reached Suzuki book 6 and beyond are invited to seek out other repertoire as a supplement to their Suzuki studies. Students who are involved in an orchestra are also invited to bring excerpts of their music to their lessons so that I can help them to feel confident and prepared at playing tests and auditions.
