For beginning students I start with Suzuki books until about book 5 and then begin to branch out into other repertoire.  I teach students to read music as well as basic theory. I adjust all curriculum based on the needs of their students, in order to play up their strengths and address their flaws. I couldn't read music yet, but I would listen to my dad play and just copy him.
