I started on violin in 4th grade and switched to viola in 6th grade. I was involved in private lessons, youth orchestras, competitions, City, District, Regional and All State orchestras while I was growing up. In 1991 I graduated from the State University of New York with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Music. From there I attended Carnegie Mellon University and received my Music Education Certification in 1995. I received my Masters in Music in 2000 from the University of Denver. Read More

For younger students (less than 5), I think Suzuki method would probably work best! We would focus on small exercises to establish good posture and sound while learning mainly through imitation and listening. When a student is able, I do encourage some theory as to read music fluently and gain understanding of basic musical concepts. At this age, I also encourage weekly technical exercises (scales, etudes) to improve ability and fluidity of playing. Read More

My teaching experience started in my undergrad when I began giving individual lessons as well as coaching sectionals from time to time. When I became a TA at Penn State, I would routinely teach students of different levels and backgrounds, giving me a wide grasp of the different needs that individual students have. Throughout the years, I have had experience teaching a healthy variety of students: scientists, bodybuilders, musicians who play other instruments, and people who just have an itch for learning the violin or viola. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More
