I have also excelled as both a teacher and a tutor. In 2011, I began my own business teaching piano, strings, composition/music theory and electronic music production. Additionally, I have set up sound and instrumentation for orchestras and bands including Trey Anastasio of Phish and The National Chorale at Lincoln Center and has performed at Carnegie Hall. Ultimately the classical route did not give me enough freedom to play the way I wanted to. In my work as a teacher I have found that the pursuit of an instrument, though hard work, should fundamentally be enjoyable for the student. Whether it is finding the music that resonates deeply with you, or constructing practice assignments that are clear and achievable within a week, I want to connect with each student I teach and help them to find a regular rhythm in their lessons that keeps them feeling productive. My approach to learning an instruments is to have the students learn to play by ear first before they can start learning to read music. I find that most students are able to progress quickly because it frees them to focus on the playing the instruments rather than reading notes.
