I like to ask questions such as "How did playing this passage make you feel? or "What is this piece of music mean to you?" For beginning students I would focus on their posture and breathing. It's easy to start with bad posture and breathing when you are just starting out and if kept, it will be incredibly hard to get into having good posture and breathing techniques. Then we would focus on exercises that their band teacher or I gave out, and we would work on scales. For more advanced players I would start to use excerpts from the Arbons book. Read More

Basically I start with questions on why the individual wants to learn how to play that particular instrument. Then I follow with how much do they know about the instrument of their choice. So following a brief historical lesson we get into how to start playing that instrument. Also why I love to play that instrument and why I'm playing it with passion. In 2018 I graduated with honors from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance where I studied with Chad Winkler of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. As long as my student is motivated to learn I could not care less if they were the worst player on the planet; I will endure thick and thin to guide them to success.
