I have had 25 years of experience teaching both privately and in the public schools of Abington, Mass. Many of my students have gone on to major in music in college. Many have become professional performers in jazz bands, concert bands, and symphony orchestras. I am a very positive thinking person, and always try to have this become an influence on the attitude of my students. I feel that learning to play a musical instrument is an integral part of developing self confidence, and getting along with others. Read More

I love teaching music. I love it for the way a high school student and a middle-aged stockbroker light up the same way as they learn how to play their favorite song for the first time, or hear Miles Davis playing the blues, and realize they have music in them too. Jacobs approach of "song and wind" is the basis for my teaching style. It is essential as a brass player to focus on hearing the sound in your mind, training your ear, and allowing your body to produce the result without intervention.  To train students to hear the sound, to learn to play with others, I believe strongly in demonstrating examples on the trombone for the student, playing things back and forth, and sometimes playing together.      Read More

With beginners, I start with the basics of acquiring the best sound possible, believing sound to be the fundamental building block. I then start with scales, teaching fingering, and basic reading. Of course, my methods depend on the age and level of student I am teaching. Everything varies with each student. The more advanced the student is, the more they will know exactly what they want to learn and how they want to learn. Read More
