My teaching style is to go at the student's pace but also to gently encourage and motivate all along the way. In this way, the students has the incentive to work at their own pace while I try to move the momentum along. The whole idea is to have fun while learning and to motivate each other by learning and playing music together. My additional teaching style is to also listen to music together and assign trumpeters to listen to. in this way the student is able to hear what other trumpet players sound like and can hopefully acquire the sound they like and want in their ear to emulate it in their own sound. For younger students, I begin lessons on basic elements of music, usually a method book that both teaches theory, ear training, and sight-reading. I introduce solo repertoire as soon as possible whether for a recital or for preparation for other solos. Typically I want to know what style the student is interested in and learn where they are lacking in skillset; moving forward accordingly. These were wonderful opportunities to teach peers and those who have been in the music education field much longer than the four of us. Although teaching large groups is exciting, nothing beats one-on-one lessons with a student. I have had and taught plenty of these lessons for several instruments including flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, french horn, euphonium, tuba, percussion, piano, guitar, and bass guitar.
