My lessons typically break down into three sections: Building Fundamental, Extending Techniques, and Making Music. How much time is spent on each of these is dependent on the individual student and what they need to develop most at that particular time. I always give students attainable goals for the next week, and a few long-term goals. I find these goals help keep the student on task from week to week and give them something to keep striving for. I focus beginning students the value of good air support and aim to get them the best tone possible. From there, I get them playing songs that they recognize, teaching both by ear and with a method book. I believe it is important for students to be exposed to quality musicianship as often as possible, so I play for them regularly and have them try to copy my phrasing and sound. Read More

Students learn best in different ways and at different paces. I enjoy getting to know my students' strengths and trying multiple strategies to help them learn new concepts. Learning to play an instrument is very special because students can see and hear their own progress in real time. This is what makes learning and teaching the horn so exciting! Read More
Instruments: Piano Trumpet Trombone
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, Faber Piano Adventures, Standards of Excellence, and/or any beginning book the student will enjoy. For beginning adults, the Rubank Elementary Method books, the Older Beginner Piano Course by James Bastien, and/or any other books the student would enjoy. Along with those books of instruction, I would encourage students to learn level-appropriate solo repertoire. At the intermediate to advance level, I would encourage the Hanon Virtuoso Pianist book, the Sonata Album for the Piano from Schirmer's Library of Musical Classics, and the Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet and for Trombone. I am a passionate and patient instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. I graduated from Bowling Green State University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Instrumental Music Education, with a focus on Euphonium. I have worked as a long term sub in middle school band and have taught privately since that time. I currently work outside the education field, but still enjoy sharing music with those who want to learn. Read More

As a teacher in public and charter schools, I have directed choruses, small chamber ensembles, orchestras, and musical theater. I started teaching music lessons during college, where I excelled as a trombonist. Although I remain a brass teacher, I "made the switch" to singing in 2005. In 2006 I was accepted to graduate school for singing and historical musicology. I have had the opportunity to perform with some of the finest conductors and ensembles in the nation, and I bring my professional experiences into the classroom and the studio. Read More
