For brass instrumental students, I generally use the Rubank Method books, focusing on care of the instrument and basic fundamentals. For piano students I use a variety of different method books and am not tied down to any one series. We will also work on scales and the Hannon series For vocal students, I use a series of vocalises, scales and other exercises to strengthen the voice. I graduated from the State University of New York at Fredonia in May 2017 with two Bachelors degrees in music education and flute performance. In my time there, I completed secondary band methods, elementary band methods, elementary general music methods, as well as my student teaching at Morrow Elementary (band and general music) and Reed Middle Schools (band and general music) in the Central Islip School District on Long Island. My lessons are not built for me to tell the student what to do, but rather learn how they learn and research the best practices for reaching that student. There is no "cookie cutter" method that works for all students, because everyone learns and comprehends a little bit differently. I remain sensitive to that and patient with my students. My method of teaching is to start students with a strong foundation of buzzing and making characteristic sounds on the horn. This includes buzzing with and without the mouthpiece. Also, my students must be able to read music. Reading music is very important to me, having the students be musically literate with a decent tone will take a student far in their musical career. My teaching style is to MAKE IT FUN. No punishment. I encourage my students to play or sing whatever they want with my help for the structure. For example: I'm teaching a student to date music theory. At one point 10 years ago when I was teaching a student theory, she completely shut down and wanted no longer to take piano lessons because of the difficulty of it.
