I began piano lessons in the 2nd grade, and studied flute and guitar, and finally settled on playing French Horn in High School. I took lessons from a horn player in the Detroit Symphony. I majored in French horn and orchestral conducting at the Rubin Academy in Tel-Aviv, Israel, and completed my Undergraduate degree at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. I always encourage them to practice the best they really can. It is always important in order for the student to progress, they must try their best to make time to practice, for at least 30 minutes (especially for newcomers). What I believe can help motivate them is by showing examples or sharing video clips of their favorite jazz trumpet tunes or clips. My job is to match my students where they are at, and try to bring them to the next level. For each instrument, I have the same basic approach: discover what they like, assess what they can do, and begin with the fundamentals.  If a student is more advanced, I still like to spend time on fundamentals at the beginning anyway to see if we can fill in any foundational weakness that the student may have.   For each instrument, I also have a wide array of repitoire that I give students that zero-in on technical challenges a student will be presented with.
