I am a southern California retired music teacher. I graduated with a double major in music from South Dakota State University. I use elements of the master brass teachers' methods. The teachings of Arban, Clarke, Colin, Arnold Jacobs, and Carmine Caruso are my influences, and I use their ideas and exercises in lessons.I emphasize the fundamentals of trumpet playing: tone production, articulation, flexability, and finger dexterity. It is important for students to play by ear as well as read written notation. Read More

With most beggining students I use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements 2000. For intermediate students I find the Rubank methods move at a faster pace and put a larger emphases on scales. For beginning students, when students are ready I will introduce an easy solo book. In most cases I use Belwin Master Solos or an Essential Elements supplement depending on the interests of the student. For students interested in learning jazz or other forms of improvisation, I would use Hal Leonard's "How to Play from a Real Book" in combination with the Hal Leonard or Aebersold play-along series. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student improve on their instrument. In order to see this growth, a realistic plan of action needs to be employed. I begin by assessing each student's level, as well as their needs and desires, and then form a plan of action to address those needs. If the student has deficiencies in a specific area I usually try to tackle this first, especially if it affects their overall ability to make a good sound, articulate efficiently, or play with ease. Music, at its most basic, should be fun, and I try to impart that to my students. Lessons with me involve jokes, fun music, and taking our music making to the extreme. In addition, I strive to teach music as a language; learning it both aurally and visually, developing an ear for music and self-evaluation while learning to read the notes on the page. I also see it as my duty to model what the student musician should strive to sound like, giving them an ideal sound in their head through frequent modeling. Read More

With 14 years of teaching in the public and charter school systems, I am very experienced in determining the learning styles of my students and finding what works best for their musical education. The most important thing is to enjoy learning and performing music. My students have found that the more they learn, the better they get, and the more fun it is to play music! Read More

With each student or students I first have to assess to see what level they are playing so that I can start them out at a level that would benefit them. I will be teaching online because of the fact that I am in a wheelchair and not able to get into the homes of the students that I teach. I have done this before and have been successful at it.
