I teach all my students the fundamentals, including correct breathing and playing techniques. My young beginners usually start with an elementary method book plus exercises and songs customized for each student. I am familiar with and have taught from all of the books that are currently available. My favorites are Standard of Excellence, Essential Elements, Ed Sueta's Band Method, and Rubank's Method. I do set realistic goals and make sure that my trombone students are comfortable with meeting those goals. For beginners, I use the Standards of Excellence book, especially if they are young children because that is the book that they will most likely use in middle school or high school. These books are good for teaching the fundamentals. I also assign a solo piece based on skill level along with an excerpt of a song that the student wants to learn. For more advanced students I use the Arban's book because all trumpet players learn from this book; from intermediate players all the way up to professionals. Read More
