I do set realistic goals and make sure that my trombone students are comfortable with meeting those goals. I was a slow learner on piano, so I can understand how confusing and frustrating it can be at times to learn an instrument. It is very important that each student sets their own goals to reach at the end of each lesson to achieve for the next week. I am a big advocate of positive reinforcement.
