Overview:
I've performed on trumpet, cornet, trombone, baritone and French horn for over 40 years, and I love to play in many different styles and groups. I've played in symphony orchestras as well as concert bands, both amateur and professional. I've played top 40's with various rock, Latin and R&B bands, vintage dance music from the 19th and 20th centuries, and both Modern and Traditional Jazz. I also arrange and compose music for various ensembles, including my own groups. I keep abreast of new currents in music and in music education, and I never stop learning.
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching the brass instruments for over 30 years, and I love to teach my students! I teach all ages, and I tailor my teaching to the student's own pace and abilities. I'm very good at sizing up students and telling them exactly what they need to do to instantly improve their playing. I also include some education in music theory as part of our lessons. I assist and encourage my students to become the best musicians they can be, which includes learning different styles of music, composing their own music, and preparing for auditions and competitions. Most of my students stay with me for years, as they keep reaping the benefits of my deep musical knowledge and intuition. I'm also flexible with changing schedules, as most of my students pursue other interests and activities.
METHODS USED
I teach all my students the fundamentals, including correct breathing and playing techniques. My young beginners usually start with an elementary method book plus exercises and songs customized for each student. I am familiar with and have taught from all of the books that are currently available. My favorites are Standard of Excellence, Essential Elements, Ed Sueta's Band Method, and Rubank's Method. For my more advanced students, I use Arban's Complete Conservatory Method. I also give the student solo pieces for his/her level. I have my students keep a lesson assignment journal in a blank manuscript book, in which I also write playing tips, exercises and songs tailored to each student. A set practice routine is a must in order to improve. So, I teach my students how to practice correctly, I provide practice records for my students to keep, and I discuss and set realistic practice goals for my students. For young musicians, I encourage their parents to assist and monitor them in attaining these goals.
LESSON STYLE
It is rewarding for me to see my students develop a passion for the music they play as well as for playing their instrument better. I foster my students' knowledge and interest in music by giving them insights and fun facts about the pieces they are studying as well as the lives of the great composers and legendary performers of the music they are learning. I impress upon my students the reasons for, as well as the importance of, learning their scales and basic drills. I am rigorous and expect my students to do their best, but I'm also patient, understanding and forgiving. I strive to have my students play their notes correctly, and I go beyond that to instruct them in the style in which a piece is to be played. I try to instill confidence in my students, to encourage their muse, and to point them to success in their musical endeavors. I also like to play along with my students as a duet partner, and give them fun music to play. I welcome their questions, and fulfill their requests for favorite songs.

We highly recommend Franklin! My son who is learning to play the trumpet stated “Franklin is very encouraging but also means business” and I agree. Franklin is everything we had hoped for in a music teacher. My son is making good progress and really enjoys his lessons.

Franklin has taught my 11 year old son the trumpet for a couple of years now. I’m so impressed at the progress that has been made and the mastery of songs accomplished. My son seems to respond very well to Franklin’s teaching style. He is very patient and is extremely professional. I think my son respects him very much. I would highly recommend Franklin as a teacher!!

My 11-year-old son has been taking trumpet lessons with Franklin for over a year. Franklin provides a structured teaching approach that suits my son. Franklin is patient and encouraging, but has been progressively pushing my son’s progress. Aside from the method books, Franklin provides appropriately leveled music sheets of different genres to keep up interest. They play tunes together and sometimes Franklin will harmonize with him, showing what he could potentially do one day. My son has improved a great deal under Franklin’s instruction. We’ve attended a couple of Franklin’s music gigs (he sounds fabulous) and it inspires my son to hear his teacher play.
