I'm a life-long musician and am extremely interested in passing my knowledge on to others. Currently I am a band director in the Pueblo, Colorado area but have lived all over the United States and played trumpet extensively for over 2 decades. I was trained as a trumpet player at DePaul University, UAB, and most recently at the University of Alabama, and also have experience composing and arranging music. Children should get their beginnings in technique books and eventually music that stimulates further growth and interest; and adults, like the kids, importance is placed on technique, but even moreso, good practice techniques! As adults we quickly lose patience and revert to bad habits when it comes to practice, and that slows growth, develops poor technique and narrows our abilities to only what we currently know. Throughout my musical career I have used many method books to improve my playing anywhere from beginning band books on up to the Arbans trumped method and have gained knowledge from each and everyone of them. Each of the many books I have used have been valuable in making me the player that I was. With most beggining students I use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements 2000. For intermediate students I find the Rubank methods move at a faster pace and put a larger emphases on scales. For beginning students, when students are ready I will introduce an easy solo book. In most cases I use Belwin Master Solos or an Essential Elements supplement depending on the interests of the student. For students interested in learning jazz or other forms of improvisation, I would use Hal Leonard's "How to Play from a Real Book" in combination with the Hal Leonard or Aebersold play-along series. I first find out what songs and styles of music my students are interested in, then determine what methods are best for my students to fulfill their musical goals. Some students have no experience reading music while others may be quite adept. Many of my students have been absolute beginners and it is a great joy to see them develop their skills and their passion! I'm a very passionate and motivated educator who loves sharing that passion and motivation with my students. I'm currently attending Metropolitan State University of Denver getting my bachelor's in trumpet performance. I've been playing the trumpet since I was 11, but really found that it was my calling in my junior year of high school where I decided to pursue a degree in something that I love! Since then, I have won the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award in 2018, played with the Parker Symphony as the assistant principal trumpet, have played with the Colorado Brass, the Rocky Mountain Jazz Orchestra, and the Mariachi Los Caracaminos de MSU, as well as many other chamber ensembles both professionally and at my university.
