I began teaching private lessons in 1989. My focus is to understand what learning style my students have and base my teaching methods on their individual needs. In college I studied pedagogies (teaching methods) for band, orchestra and majored in vocal and classroom education. Since achieving my degree in teaching kindergarten through 12th grade education, I have worked in Preschool, Elementary, Middle School, and High School settings as well with the elderly. Read More

The most important and fundamental thing you can teach a student about music is that it can always be enjoyable. Music should be enjoyed, by the audience as well as the player. This is key to following through with music, I will always try to find a way to make the exercises I assign fun, or atleast not overly boring or repetitive. Students should be given more than one goal at a time, some of these goals should be very short term, while others should be long term, this instills a sense of confidence, but not a sense of hubris. For brass, woodwind, and percussion students who are in a school band or orchestra, I would use the school's chosen method book in additional to supplemental materials that I would provide, based on the student's interests and needs. For those who are not in band and are just starting, my preferred method for brass and woodwind players is Tradition of Excellence. For intermediate players, I like to use material from the Rubank Intermediate book in addition to more fun material on an individual basis. Read More

For beginning students, I generally start with the Accent on Achievment book series and spend the first few lessons assessing and addressing the important fundamentals of the students' particular instrument. After working out of the book for an apropriate amount of time, I introduce solo repertiore from both pop and classical genres. I want my students to learn, but I want them to have fun and enjoy what they are learning. Read More

My teaching style is simple! I make having fun the most important part, especially for beginners because no one wants to do anything that isn't fun! It was the same for me when I started learning tennis. I ensure first that a student has a general grasp on basic scales and mechanics that are essential for the trumpet and afterwards I like to look into other components of the trumpet such as intonation, trumpet concertos and more advanced concepts such as attacks, soft/loud, playing higher, etc. Read More

For beginner trumpeters, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements and then slowly transition into solo repertoire that suits their skill set as they make it into the intermediate level. As advanced players, we will focus on refining skills with drill books as well as work on standards in solo repertoire. For my vocal students, we will always work on range and flexibility exercises as well as vocal repertoire from multiple genres that suit the skill level of the singer. Read More
