I began teaching saxophone in college, and since graduating I have taught students in Los Angeles as well as around the world, as far as New Zealand. I love to spread the knowledge I have gained from my experience as a professional musician to any up and coming musicians who want to learn. I teach all levels of saxophone up to the most advanced/professional, up to intermediate level on flute and trumpet, and beginner level clarinet. Read More

Teaching the most basic concepts in how to build a chord or a scale by using formulas is my favorite way to approach the lesson. An individual's understanding of music is always changing therefore I feel it is better to change with them. Using methods which are proven is important, but the idea of improvisation during a lesson always keeps the interest for me and the student. Of course this depends completely on the age and the experience of a student. Read More
Instruments: Piano Violin Viola Trumpet Recorder Fiddle
I like to start out beginning string students with Essential Elements 2000 by the Hal Leonard company. They have a complete system which includes professionally recorded accompaniments which provide a model for the student to hear how to play with good intonation, tone and rhythm which are the most important basics. In addition I recommend other sheet music with piano accompaniment or books with CD accompaniments that can be performed for friends and family. Read More

For beginners I like to start with Essential Elements 2000, although this book isn't specifically written with trumpet in mind, I do I want to get students making music as soon as possible and EE 2000 is a great start. As students advance I use some of the standard trumpet method books such as - Clarke Technical Studies, Arbans Complete Method for Trumpet, I also write out exercises that can't be found in books but feel will help the student progress. I began teaching when I was 16 in my local town of Evanston, Illinois.I have continued to teach on and off in between touring and working with others for the last 14 yrs. I currently have a 2 year old son who is very interested in trumpet so I am beginning to show him the ropes and am well aware of the struggles of teaching younger children. I emphasize a regular regiment of practice every day of at least 20 minutes. Read More
Instruments: Piano Trumpet Saxophone Euphonium
I think it is absolutely important to develop a teaching style that is based around positive reinforcement. Praising when you like what the student did. When you can tell there is progress from week to week, telling Jonny that you can tell he practiced is a brilliant way to inspire Jonny to associate hard work with progress. I live by the mantra, 2 praises and a wish, meaning offering 2 words of REAL positivity followed by constructive criticism. Read More
