At the onset, I believe that hand position is incredibly important, so I make sure to pick exercises and etudes that reflect that importance. I am very flexible on my teaching methods. My methods really differ for each student and their needs and wants. It is important to teach 10 year olds and 30 year olds differently! I like to make the trumpet fun, because that is what music is all about right? For beginners we might work on songs they may know and find fun and can tell their friends about at school. For adults I would do the same but make it more difficult and go further into what they may want to learn. Read More

Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Through infancy, I believe Music Learning Theory is effective for developing musical and linguistic skills. For beginning students, I like to start them on the Hal Leonard Essential Elements. I believe it moves at the proper pacing for young children. For intermediate students, Accent on Achievement works well because I find the music is more challenging. Also I require older students to know scales, primarily Bb, Eb, and F major being that they are the easiest to learn. It is from there that I gradually add a new scale (one every few weeks) until ultimately all 12 major scales are learned. Read More
