I have taught private students, clinics, summer workshops and full band classes. So I typically take a very relaxed approach during the first few lessons, to get the student to loosen up and feel comfortable, all while observing the student in order to assess their strengths and weaknesses, and figure out what types of music the student is interested in making. For beginning woodwind students, I have had success using the Rubank method books as a starter. Alongside a method book, I like to work on material chosen by the student, as well as my own supplemntal exercises. It is important for the student to understand the musical concepts associated with the repertoire, as well as focusing on performing well. I also prefer to have my students keep a practice log book, in order to track their progress. For piano and music theory, I like to use the John Thompson method for beginner students, and the Bastien Piano Literature series for more advanced students. I began teaching trombone and improvisation when I was a junior in High School. Currently I am adept in Singing, Music Theory, Trombone, Bass (-classical) and Electronic Music, but I also practice Flute, Piano, Guitar,Percussion (congas) and Tap Dancing. I have been told that I have a very unconventional teaching style, but I prefer to call it simplicity. The best lesson I learned before attending college, my trumpet teacher taught me, "If you sound good while practicing, you're not really practicing", which I make sure to mention multiple times. I never try to overload my students with too much material, but instead try to understand what they would like to learn, and develop lessons and exercises from that.
