I am a professional trumpet player and educator. I am currently an adjunct professor at Richard Stockton University in New Jersey where I teach trumpet and coach a small jazz ensemble. I also teach many students privately out of my home studio. I have a very busy performing schedule currently and have been fortunate enough to perform all over the world with my own group as well as many other artists as diverse as Lou Rawls and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. I began teaching private students while in college through a music store in Ellicott City, MD. I taught students from age 6 to 15. I had up to 15 students on varied occasions. I maintained students on and off throughout my 7 years of music teaching in public schools following graduating from college, but lost many students when I relocated from Baltimore to Lancaster. For beginner students in fourth grade or above, I like to work with the method book that their school district uses. Most districts use Essential Elements from Hal Leonard or Standards of Excellence. If the student is also a beginner at reading music, we will focus on music fundamentals and basic theory to build their notation reading skills. I like to integrate songs the students choose, whether it be from a movie or a pop song, to not only reinforce their techniques, but to get the student excited about practicing and performing music. My passion for the trumpet has come from developing my skills through a disciplined focus on mechanics and fundamentals. In middle school most of my development came through trial and error with a transition to private lessons my junior year of high school. I have found that a majority of young trumpet players approach the instrument in a fashion that hinders their progress. By training a student to shift from a "pressure" to a " compression" mindset they are able to use the air stream to reach their range, power and flexibility goals. Read More
