Instruments: Trumpet
My new students typically spend their first lesson and sometime their second getting used to playing the trumpet for the first time; the goal is to learn proper breathing, posture and tone. I have found the best method book for students is the "Learn to Play the Trumpet/Cornet" method book and always ask that students purchase the Arban's Method book, a must have for any trumpet player. Once the student is proficient in beginning methods, I like to move on to technical studies and the Sigmund Hering Etudes, as well as studies in the Arban's Method; if the student has progressed well enough Concertos and solo performance music will be added. My methods vary from student to student. I believe strongly in making sure students are learning what they want to learn and adapting to every students needs! While I will employ different techniques with each student, I do tend to use several concepts universally. I like to use a Kodly based system to teach all styles of music. All music is taught through internalization by listening and analyzing and then emulation of what is heard. Read More

For beginner students in fourth grade or above, I like to work with the method book that their school district uses. Most districts use Essential Elements from Hal Leonard or Standards of Excellence. If the student is also a beginner at reading music, we will focus on music fundamentals and basic theory to build their notation reading skills. I like to integrate songs the students choose, whether it be from a movie or a pop song, to not only reinforce their techniques, but to get the student excited about practicing and performing music. I have been singing and playing music all my life, but my instrumental music career began in 1994 when I was handed my first Baritone Horn. Little did I know that i'd spend the next 30 years explaining what a baritone (or euphonium) was to my friends and family. Since then I have played and taught through college in multiple bands and wind ensembles, and also enjoyed a great career in the marching arts - via High School, College, NFL bands, and 2 different drum corps. I believe every student develops at their own pace and has their own ways of learning. As a teacher I strive to discover with the student the most effective ways to practice so that musical goals are obtained in a way that is engaging and exciting for the student. This includes using different approaches to developing technique and the use of different styles of music depending on the student's interests. Read More

I only had one student thus far in my teaching career but i can truly say that i taught him so much during our experience together. The best part about teaching a student, and i'm going to restate what i said earlier, is that both grow in the process. It only took me a year to teach that little kid how to play properly. I look forward to teaching other students as i would love to influence the youth with partaking in music. Read More
