After graduating college, I was the resident trumpet at the Barter Theater in Abingdon, Virginia, before completing three contracts as a show band musician on board Celebrity Cruise ships. I have toured Europe with my university's top jazz ensemble, as well as toured the United States with two different professional drum corps, Carolina Crown and Jersey Surf. I aim to teach my students the difference between "playing the trumpet" and "making music" and how this distinction is applied to practice. "Playing the trumpet" is a physically demanding task that requires diligent, often tedious practice to become skilled at. "Making music", on the other hand, can be done by anyone at any skill level and is lots of fun. The goal of practicing the trumpet is to become so familiar with the instrument that it becomes an extension of our body and mind, as effortless and automatic to perform as breathing or walking. For more advanced students, we will be using the Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet in addition to solo repertoire other supplementary materials. For students in second or third grade who are interested in playing a wind instrument, but are not quite big enough yet, I offer recorder lessons. Learning the recorder is an excellent introduction to playing a wind instrument. Over the years I have helped many trumpet players establish their upper register with a balance of power and flexibility.
