I never try to overload my students with too much material, but instead try to understand what they would like to learn, and develop lessons and exercises from that. For beginning students as well as intermediates, the book I use and recommend is Accent on Achievement, Book One for Trumpet by John O’Reilly and Mark Williams. First, the beginning of the book shows a picture of a Trumpet showing all of its parts, valves and slides giving the student a good idea of the instrument. For beginning students, I like to start them on the Hal Leonard Essential Elements. I believe it moves at the proper pacing for young children. For intermediate students, Accent on Achievement works well because I find the music is more challenging. Also I require older students to know scales, primarily Bb, Eb, and F major being that they are the easiest to learn. It is from there that I gradually add a new scale (one every few weeks) until ultimately all 12 major scales are learned. Read More

For beginner students, I focus heavily on fundamentals consisting of breathing, mouthpiece buzzing, long tones, slurring/tonguing exercises, and scales. I will require each student to learn at least 1 new scale each week once we've established our individualized curriculum. For more intermediate/advanced students, fundamentals are still a must, but we will also begin more challenging repertoire such a solos, etudes, orchestral excerpts, and various other advanced studies depending on the student's level.
