For more advanced students, we will be using the Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet in addition to solo repertoire other supplementary materials. For students in second or third grade who are interested in playing a wind instrument, but are not quite big enough yet, I offer recorder lessons. I aim to teach my students the difference between "playing the trumpet" and "making music" and how this distinction is applied to practice. "Playing the trumpet" is a physically demanding task that requires diligent, often tedious practice to become skilled at. "Making music", on the other hand, can be done by anyone at any skill level and is lots of fun. In my experience I have found that it is most effective to teach students in a one-on-one setting. When others are involved in the lesson it can cause a student to become self conscious and therefore effects their progress. I'm a big believer in setting small but achievable goals. I also believe that achieving technical mastery of an instrument is a simple process of building habits. Some students may want to be pushed hard and challenged at every turn. Other students may not respond so well to such an approach so a different pace and style is required. It all depends on the student but in general I think a friendly smile and warm demeanor create a comfortable environment for the student to ask questions and perform their best each time I see them. My professional teaching experience started in 1986 with teaching students one-on-one. My students have achieved lifelong skills on piano, brass, woodwind, and guitar.
