Instruments: Trumpet Music

Teaching has been an integral part of my own musical development. When not performing I was the resident trumpet teacher and embouchure specialist at the San Francisco School Of Jazz and have taught privately on an ongoing basis. "When given a gift as I have, I believe it is an absolute responsibility to share it with others." Trumpet is an especially challenging instrument to master and I believe that the correct fundamentals (embouchure studies, breathing, posture, tonguing, scales and interval studies) are critical components of musical success. My teaching experience has been quite rewarding and varied over the years. Every student has a unique and special passion that has drawn them into music and I make sure to acknowledge that in order to maintain that spirit even when a task is in front of them. My main focus is the technical aspect of the instrument, helping the student discover how it works for them, so they can shape the music the best way possible. My love for teaching began as a peer tutor in college. I tutored students in piano, guitar, bass ear training, and music theory. I began to love teaching when I noticed the change and progress it creates within people. While in college, I taught at a musical theatre camp as a music teacher. I taught music theory, ear training, and vocal music. Right after I graduated college I was accepted into the music education program at Teachers College Columbia University where I received my masters degree in music education along with certification in New York state to teach Pre-K through 12. I help each student not only meet their goals on their instrument, but also to meet their goals in life. If a student is interested in music, I strive to help them discover their big "Why?". Why do they play their instrument, and what is their reason for making music. I believe in coach-based teaching. In other words, the student is on their journey to discover how to achieve their goals, and I am a coach to guide them on their way. Read More

As a teacher, I like to focus on each students needs as becoming a well rounded musician.  I like to work from a few method books including Arbans, Rubank, and Schlossberg for building up your embouchere as a trumpet player.  We will focus in on technique, embouchere building, jazz improvisation, and music theory. I always encourage my students that if there is a piece of music they would like to learn, bring it to the lesson and we will work on it. Read More

I was a student of Laurie Frink, who is widely regarded as the greatest trumpet/brass teacher to ever live. I use alot of her methods to teach students who are intermediate/advanced level. This includes her book, "flexus", along with a number of exercises tailored to the student. Laurie always found a way to teach every student differently, based on their weaknesses and strengths. My goal is to do the same. Read More
