My particular brand of brass pedagogy has roots that trace back to the Chicago Symphony's legendary Bud Herseth. I believe in the pursuit of mastery of many of the basic techniques of brass playing - air movement, flexibility, and tone are the most important pieces of what we do as brass players, and I have collected an arsenal of exercises to build skill in these areas. Depending on how experienced the student is, I make sure to gauge where they are at regarding music theory and music history. Although the main goal of learning an instrument is to learn how to express yourself through music, it is important to understand how we can do that by having a solid understanding of theory and history. I've found that teaching students on a week-by-week basis through exercises that I create for them has been very successful, especially since a lot of method books are very limiting, and they expect every student to be starting out with the same baseline. My musical background began when at 7 yrs. old I was playing the piano with my mothers instruction. I became a self taught student in brass and piano and later was accepted as a Music major to West Chester University. During HS I became known as a trumpet soloist in Regional and State Bands and in the Salvation Army brass program a cornet soloist. My love for teaching began as a peer tutor in college. I tutored students in piano, guitar, bass ear training, and music theory. I began to love teaching when I noticed the change and progress it creates within people. While in college, I taught at a musical theatre camp as a music teacher. I taught music theory, ear training, and vocal music.
