I love learning about how each student learns, and I've always challenged myself to plan accordingly. My students have been honored not only in their own band programs, but also in Georgia All State Band and DCI. After basic musical skills have been developed I'll move on to more interesting solo pieces based on the interests and needs of the students. For beginning piano students, I usually begin with the Alfred Prep Course, supplemented with a notespeller to help expedite learning to read music. I also begin ear training, chords, and solo repertoire as the student becomes ready. For voice students, I begin with breathing, vocal technique, and skill-level appropriate songs. Typically when I begin with children I incorporate the Hoffman Method and Books such as the Little Mozarts books, Alfred, Faber and Master Theory. I allow for children to learn fundamentals in a fun way so they can begin to read music and perform if they are interested. Students get to learn the basics like Mary had a little lamb, hot cross buns, jingle bells, and other fun tunes. My goal for every student is to experience learning their instruments in an environment that is both encouraging and rewarding. I exhibit patience with the student knowing what it takes to develop new skills and I work hard in helping each student feel at ease in expressing themselves.
