Teaching has been a regular part of my life since my undergraduate days. At the University of Idaho, I had the opportunity to be a Learning Assistant for freshman music theory, aural skills, and jazz theory; a position that involved more actual teaching than the typical teaching assistantship. For beginner students, I focus heavily on fundamentals consisting of breathing, mouthpiece buzzing, long tones, slurring/tonguing exercises, and scales. I will require each student to learn at least 1 new scale each week once we've established our individualized curriculum. For more intermediate/advanced students, fundamentals are still a must, but we will also begin more challenging repertoire such a solos, etudes, orchestral excerpts, and various other advanced studies depending on the student's level. My approach to teaching is a logical one. The student needs to learn to "crawl', and then to 'walk" and then to run. With an organized succession of excersizes, the student can learn the basics of the instrument which will lead to the ability to play more fun songs.That is the goal of learning the instrument; to be able to eventually play some fun music!! Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music and find enjoyment! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace with fun. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more.
