For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, especially for brass instruments. I also tend to mix in some fun songs that are more well known using my own arrangements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

For all students, learning and being comfortable with all scales and keys is an essential fundamental skill I teach. I started playing music in 5th grade, when I was 11 years old. While I had spent my first year playing trumpet, I had switched to euphonium before I started my 6th grade year and have been playing that and trombone ever since. I spent my high school and community college years playing jazz music on both instruments, and began playing classical euphonium both in high school and when the ensembles became available upon start at TCNJ.  I have taught in a variety of musical settings with a wide range of students and abilities. I have taught independently as well as for organizations such as the Youth Orchestra of Central NJ. In 2012 I worked for Camp Encore Coda where I taught trumpet lessons, directed the Symphonic Band, coached jazz combos, and taught music theory/musicianship class.  My experience working as full time music faculty for Camp Encore Coda sparked my graduate research on overnight summer music camp, which has since been presented at three major professional conferences in the music education field at the state, national, and international level.  Read More
