For beginner students, I typically start with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements book. For more advanced students I love using Rochut Melodious Etudes and Arban's Method book. For all students, learning and being comfortable with all scales and keys is an essential fundamental skill I teach. One of the most rewarding expeiences in teaching for me is to see the look on a student's face when they "get it". What a thrill to instill a love of music and learning in a student. I set realistic goals and always give them something to work towards (recital, concert, etc). I listen to my students to discover what motivates them toward further learning.
