My approach is always to make music first. Yes I like to teach how to play "correctly" and all the "right" notes, but at the end of the day there is something bigger to take from music. Music moves people and it is my job as a teacher to show my students that beauty. The point of the lesson is to teach the student how to practice the materials and better themselves. I just want to see my students try, that is most important to me. At a younger age, I like to explore music they might already know or recognize from some form of media. My teaching experience began in college. I quickly realized that I most enjoyed helping people on an individual basis. In addition to performing in myriad musical idioms, I have made a career of private teaching, having conducted over 26,000 lessons since 2001. My performance experience weaves its way into many lessons, as I am able to share “real-life” experiences about the practicality of the material that we study. For beginning students on brass instruments, I like to use the Rubank Methods. It is important to me to get the student playing familiar tunes as soon as possible so that they enjoy playing but not at the expense of the fundamentals. Generally, I choose a piece for a student to play and then they choose a piece. Of course I emphasize the rudiments of each instrument and I incorporate technique into each piece they choose and each piece I choose.
