Funnily enough, my first private lesson student was actually a peer while I was in high school who wanted some tips and tricks. I also maintained a small lesson studio consisting throughout my time at the University of Iowa. Those lessons were driven heavily by the interests of my students. I had one student trying to prepare for a collegiate music major audition, I had one with interest in becoming a composer, and a more casual student whose ultimate goal was to gain enough skills to lead music in church worship services. In the summer of 2022, he served as an artist fellow in the Atlantic Music Festival, giving varied performances in orchestral, chamber and solo settings. To fuse his dedication to performance with his interest in academic research, Tommy also presented a full lecture recital in the recent conference on cultural assimilation in music hosted by the University of Calgary. It depends on the age of the student, but there are plenty of method books and pieces that can both teach a student music theory and notation, as well as their performance skill. With beginners its perfect to start with the Rubank series from Beginner-Intermediate. Many students are given the "Standard of Excellence" series by their school teacher and that series works as well. I believe these books are a great start, but can get old fast. Read More
