For beginners, I use the Standards of Excellence book, especially if they are young children because that is the book that they will most likely use in middle school or high school. These books are good for teaching the fundamentals. I also assign a solo piece based on skill level along with an excerpt of a song that the student wants to learn. For more advanced students I use the Arban's book because all trumpet players learn from this book; from intermediate players all the way up to professionals. Read More

I understand that each student progresses at their own pace and has diffrent goals and desires. I have my students keep a lesson assignment journal in a blank manuscript book, in which I also write playing tips, exercises and songs tailored to each student. A set practice routine is a must in order to improve. I have taught private trombone lessons while I was attending University of North Texas and taught trombone and piano for another private music company. I make sure to keep active on my trombone by playing in as many bands as possible and encourage my students to do the same.
