For beginning students, I like to start them on the Hal Leonard Essential Elements. I believe it moves at the proper pacing for young children. For intermediate students, Accent on Achievement works well because I find the music is more challenging. Also I require older students to know scales, primarily Bb, Eb, and F major being that they are the easiest to learn. Aquiles Navarro is a New York-based trumpeter, composer and DJ of Panamanian heritage. He derives his sounds from folkloric music, salsa, and reggae. This eclectic music background, based on his upbringing in Panama has led him to collaborate with folkloric musicians, dancers, visual artists, actors, and poets. He studied in Panama with tenor player Carlos Garnett and trumpeter Victor “Vitin” Paz. After moving to the US, he received a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance at the New England Conservatory, and a Master’s degree from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami where he studied with trumpeter Brian Lynch. After a few months, I begin adding solo repertoire that is appropriate for age and ability. For middle school age students and adults, I start with Alfred's Basic Piano, Adult, Level 1. My teaching experience began in my years at Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC). Next to the music building, I began to volunteer at the local daycare that was right next to the arts building. That experience is what led me to want to become a studio instructor. After those 3 years passed, I was unfortunately unable to teach privately through my time at TCNJ, as I was learning as many new techniques and tricks for both the euphonium and the trombone as I possible could. I like to working with kids to encourage them to continue playing music and to build up a steady regimen of practice and self evaluation.
